Glossary
Veins in the anus and rectum that have become dilated and taken on a tortuous form. Although often asymptomatic (not causing any noticeable symptoms), they may become extremely painful as clots form in the veins and tissues become swollen. Hemorrhoids are either internal (remain in the anus), or external (those that protrude outside the anus). They often result in bleeding from the strain of bowel movements.
